De Waag is a 15th-century building on the Nieuwmarkt in the center of Amsterdam. It was originally a city gate. The current name refers to the later function as a weigh house or weighing house.
Originally the building was a city gate, called St. Anthony's Gate. The gate was an extension of the Seawall. Outside the city walls ran the embankment further as St. Anthonydijk. After construction of the Lastage in the 16th century came to be St. Antoniesbreestraat and a second Port St. Anthony built at the Hortus Botanicus
The building has had a series of other features, including guild hall, museum, fire station and anatomical theater. Currently, restaurant.
In the painting, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrandt shows the decomposition of a body in the Waag.
